Dateline: 05/20/00Red Bullet shot down heavy 1-5 favorite Fusaichi Pegasus' Triple Crown hopes winning the Preakness by 3 lengths. Many were disappointed when trainer Joe Orseno and owner Frank Stronach opted to pass on the Kentucky Derby with Red Bullet but their strategy worked wonderfully for the lightly raced colt. Fusaichi Pegasus showed he was not the super horse everyone had thought after his masterful Derby win finishing a well beaten second. In his defense, he was pinched back at the start and raced wide throughout. When Red Bullet cut inside him around the turn and accelerated down the stretch, Fusaichi Pegasus just couldn't make up enough ground. Derby third place finisher Impeachment again rallied up for third in the Preakness.

Odds on favorite Fusaichi Pegasus in the post parade. His trainer Neil Drysdale said: "He couldn't handle the track. That's the way I saw it,
that's the way Kent saw it. I guess he could have been
equipped with stickers, but they only seem to help a certain kind of
horse on a certain kind of track and you don't know if that
kind of track is there. It was a greasy kind of track and he just
couldn't go with it. He was squeezed a bit, but I don't think that
hurt his chances at all. I think he just couldn't handle the track. If
he comes out of this race all right, he'll go to New York."
Eventual winner Red Bullet in the post parade. His owner Frank Stronach said: "Horses are not machines and
this one got hooked in a speed duel in his
last start (the Wood Memorial). When horses go that fast, it's hard to
get a distance. So we decided to skip the Derby and aim
for this race. What went through my mind when he won the race was that
we made the right decision."
